This is a horrible situation for all persons involved, the boy whose life was so senselessly cut short and his family, the family of the boy accused of accidently shooting his friend, as well as for that boy, himself. My heart goes out to them all! Now I hear the DA is attempting to prosecute this kid as an adult, for an accident...a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE ACCIDENT! Why? What good will that serve? As if the guilt alone isn’t enough for him to have to deal with, should he also have to spend the better part of his young adult life in prison only to lose whatever heart he has left? Talk about a tragedy.

So few guns are voluntarily registered it makes the comment meaningless, except for the emotionally-charged phrase, often used by the press, of "an unregistered gun." To the uninformed, one would think it was illegal. If ownership is what you mean, why don't you say, "since a 17 year old cannot purchase a handgun, nobody knows at this point who owns the gun."

It is not required for guns to be registered, but you have the option of registering guns if you like to. I'm sure that's what they meant - basically indicating they don't know who the owner of the gun is.

Somebody's displaying their ignorance of Kansas law. Guns are not registered in this state. The Eagle didn't add this inflamatory tidbit in their release.
