KIRWIN, Kansas -- Phillips County officials say a fire that started on top of a water tower set off a chain reaction that sent at least five people to the hospital.

Kirwin firefighters were responding to a truck fire Tuesday night, but officials say the fire actually started on top of the town's water tower.

Workers had been repairing part of the tower's roof when debris fell and caught part of a semi on fire.

As firefighters worked to put the fire out, a trailer attached to the semi exploded.

Five firefighters were taken to the hospital with injuries.

There was also a second explosion that damaged the water tower.

The state fire marshal's office and sheriff are now back on the scene to evaluate what happen.

The sheriff says most of the firefighters were treated and released, but two remain in the hospital with serious injuries.
