WICHITA, Kansas (KSN) -- Two unresponsive dogs were revived by Wichita firefighters using specialized equipment donated to the department earlier this year.
"Thank god they had them," said dog owner Verna Goff. "They're just like family. I don't know what I'd do without them."
Goff said her 4-year-old grandson set a mattress on fire while playing with a lighter. As smoke filled her mobile home in the 1200 block of West Carey everyone made it out safely. Except her two dogs.
"They could've went out but they were too afraid," said Goff's sister Suzie Hyatt. "They went and hid instead of getting out the doggie door."
Firefighters found the two pets in a back room. Both were having difficult time breathing.
Paramedics used oxygen masks designed to fit over pets' snouts to revive the dogs. Both are recovering.
Invisible Fence donated 42 of the special masks to the Wichita Fire Department in January. It’s believed this is the first time they've been used.
"Things can be replaced. Lives can't," said Hyatt. "Whether they're animals or people."
