WICHITA, Kansas -- Wichita homes are being put "for rent" on craigslist in an elaborate scam to get your money.
The homes aren't for rent at all. But unknowing victims could think they're getting a great deal and instead end up in the poor house.
An east Wichita home was listed for sale by realtor Mike Grbic.
But Tammy Mansfield found the exact same home on craigslist to rent for just $900 a month.
"(It was) too good to be true," said Mansfield.
Turns out it was.
The supposed owner sent her a long e-mail about how they had to leave the country quickly and not to worry about the sign in the yard "because we are not selling the house anymore and also do no contact any information you see on it because we are not dealing with any agent."
All suspicious enough that Tammy did contact Grbic.
"I'm getting tons of calls right now, people wanting to rent a home, they drive up to my property and see my for sale sign in the yard, call us,” said Grbic. “So far this week, we've had 14 people call our office on properties that are for sale not for rent."
Grbic says the scammer is taking his pictures of the web and creating a fake listing on craigslist.
After the e-mail exchange Grbic says the says the person offering the property will either ask prospective renter for personal information for a credit check or ask them to mail a deposit and first month's rent.
"Don't rent anything before you see it, don't mail anybody money get a person in front of you who you can have a conversation with," advised Grbic.
Tammy says she almost fell for it and opened the door to much more than a new home.
"He hadn't asked for any money yet, but it was coming to that point," she said.
Grbic says he has reported the scheme to the federal trade commission.
Scams such as this are becoming common across the United States.
