WICHITA, Kansas – The governor will sign a statewide smoking ban into law on Friday. It’s a law that bans smoking inside and even some places outside.

The ban has some businesses trying to figure out how they’ll accommodate their smoking patrons. It’s especially difficult for some bars as the law prohibits smoking near a business entrance.

"I think it's a bit confusing,” said Ben George, owner of the Anchor in downtown Wichita.

George joins other business owners across the state in wondering just how the statewide ban will work. Of course, everyone knows there will no longer be smoking allowed inside. But the ban goes beyond that.

The Anchor's outdoor patio may seem like the perfect place to light up. After all, it is outside. But the state's new law would ban smoking there too, because it's 10 feet from a door.

Part of the ban will not allow smoking 10 feet from a door, open window or air intake, making outdoor patios a smoke-free zone.

"Customers who have been drinking, they just step outside and have a cigarette,” George said. “I don't think they understand the importance."

Or, perhaps, the fines for violating the ban. The new law will be enforced by local police and for smoking where you shouldn’t police will issue a ticket. It’s a $100 fine for your first violation, $200 for your second and $500 for your third.

To keep their smoking customers out of hot water, the Anchor is building a new patio area on the side. It will be 10 feed from a door, making lighting up legal. As the Anchor sees it, they’re lucky when compared to some of their downtown neighbors.

“Compared to some other places that don't have the space, that's unfortunate for them,” said George.

The new smoking ban goes into effect on July 1st. The governor will sign the ban into law in Topeka Friday. On Monday he will hold signing ceremonies in Kansas City and Salina.

Thanks Governor (dictor) Parkinsons, Thanks for being a part of a goverment who needs to be fired. It's a good thing you are not planning on running for governor. Keep rasing taxes and passing laws, but exempt yourself (the state). History always repeats itself and I cant wait. You the lawmakers are the reason the state is broke. And to allow smoking in your bar/casino while the bar down the street cannot allow gambling or smoking. So you are not really worried about the health of tax payers as long as they are gambling huh. God forbid anyone compete with the state. People are eventually going to wake up and rise up to protect our constitution, freedom and our way of life.

Megs82, I am in the funeral business. Over 55 years, we have buried thousands of people in their 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's for various reasons who never smoked a day in their lives. I would hope that you will honor the days that your father has left and give thanks for the time he has had on this Earth. If he smoked, it was because he enjoyed it.

Megs82, sorry about your father. But why are taxpayers footing the bill? You are 27 years old and probably indoctrinated by Tobacco Free Kids. Is your father's illness even due to tobacco use? Why are taxpayers responsible? Most people in that age group have more than funded their retirement and healthcare.

I don't care about the bars I care about the "family restraunts". Smoke all you want in a bar, I don't take my kids to bars. Keep it out of restraunts! I do understand the bar issue with the smoking ban maybe it isn't fair to the owner but have you ever been told "Who ever said life was fair?" I also know that people are still gonna go out to that bar they are just gonna have to walk outside to light up.

bonsai48 my family was at the picnic table first so stick that in your pipe and smoke it. My personal vendetta with smoking has to do with my ill father setting in a nursing home right now because he smoked 2 packs a day for 40 years. I am pissed because I am 27yrs old visiting my dad in a nursing home with my 2 small children. Typically at my age you visit a grandparent not a parent in a nursing home. He made a poor choice with his health and now guess what the taxpayers are paying for him to be in that nursing home. Now my whole family is suffering because of his health. And my children don't get to experience the Grandpa they once new. So yeah I have a personal problem with smoking!!!!!!!!! I don't want to be exposed to it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again Governor Parkinsons.

I am a non-smoker. I have never smoked, BUT this ban is wrong. If an owner of a bar wants to having smoking permitted, they should. If a person does not want to be around smoke, DON'T GO IN! The people in favor of this ban apparently do not have any regard for all the bar owners, who have made it there life owning and or running a bar. They will be out of a job, out of income.... what about them?? What about their rights? What about their life? What about their families? Jacque in Wichita

Thank you, Megs82 for proving my point. Those businesses had the FREEDOM to make that decision without the government mandating it and everything worked out just fine. Our Constitution works.

My persnickity needs what about all of you guys throwing a fit about a smoking ban. All of you griping about your needs to smoke where other people who choose not to smoke. Not everyone should have to cater to you and your pro-smoking agenda. We have been catering to your needs for over a 100 years. What's really funny is a lot of restaraunts where I live started with the non smoking over a year ago. And that was there choice and when you ask why, it's because of the health risk and smoking deters customers. My husband and I avoided a particular restraunt for 2 years because of the smoking and now that it's non smoking they have more business now than ever and yes it is a sports bar and they do serve alcohol.
