GREENSBURG, Kansas – Cessna is making new efforts to go ‘green’ and give back to a community known for its own desire to be environmentally friendly.

"Our hope is this collaboration serves as a model for other communities and businesses that wish to pursue environmental excellence,” said Jack Pelton, Cessna president and CEO.

The plan calls for Greensburg to help Cessna develop initiatives that will lessen the company’s impact on the environment by sharing some of their ‘green’ ideas.

They’ll focus on five different areas, including aircraft, emissions, industrial emissions, recycling consumables, energy conservation and engaging employees in environmental issues.

“As we look to Cessna over the next eight years, how much of that technology could we put into our own plan and equipment,” Pelton said. “So we're learning a lot and we're hoping we learn a lot and then in return we can give Greensburg some ideas that might help them down the road."

One idea is turning Greensburg’s tiny airport into a ‘green’ airport, hopefully bringing in more people and jobs to stimulate the local economy.

Cessna leaders say they’ve recruited the world’s largest general aviation organization to help with the effort, creating a win-win situation with a shared goal for both Greensburg and Cessna.

"Keep our name and their name as leaders in south-central Kansas and the world of being sustainable companies and a sustainable city,” said Mayor Bob Dixson.
