WICHITA, Kansas – Pro-life activists don’t want a Nebraska abortion provider to open a clinic in Kansas, so they’re trying to get the Kansas Board of Healing Arts to investigate him.

Dr. Leroy Carhart has operated a clinic in the Omaha, Nebraska area since 1985. After Dr. George Tiller’s murder, he vowed to bring those services back to Kansas and says his first choice is to have a clinic in Wichita. But Kansans for Life is trying to prevent that from happening.

The group started a petition drive in 2007, handing over 800,000 signatures asking that Carhart be investigated. But the board put that investigation on hold while it investigated Tiller. Now, Kansans for Life is gathering signatures again, petitioning the board to not allow Carhart to practice in Kansas.

“What we're trying to do is alert the Board of Healing Arts that the same things George Tiller was doing that were wrong are being done by Carhart and if they were going to discipline Tiller, they should discipline Carhart,” said David Gittrich with Kansans for Life.

So far, the group has collected nearly 6,000 signatures. They plan to be at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson to gather more. Their goal is to have 25,000 by November. That’s when they’ll present the petition to the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.
