WICHITA, Kansas – Mike Huckabee was in Wichita for a book signing Monday and hundreds of supporters stood in line in the rain just to meet him.

"I know me, and I wouldn't wait in the rain for me,” Huckabee said.

Huckabee greeted a huge crowd in the parking lot of Watermark Books. Police say around 1,000 people showed up for the book signing.

Kansas was one of eight states won by Huckabee during the presidential primaries last year and he remains popular to many conservatives in the state.

“People want to hear stuff (and) they'll say things just to make people happy,” said Andover resident John Kalita. “He says things that are true and I respect him for it.”

“We watch his show every week -- we think he's right on target with where our nation needs to be today,” said Carol Garrett of Wichita.

“I just wish the rest of the country had been as smart as Kansas obviously showed themselves to be,” Huckabee said. “There was a book called What's the Matter with Kansas? My reaction to that is there’s nothing wrong with Kansas. It's the rest of the country that's crazy.”

Huckabee says he was stunned at the turnout for his appearance to sign A Simple Christmas, which is a collection of Christmas stories. It’s his seventh and favorite of his books he’s authored.

A new Gallup poll shows Huckabee as the Republican frontrunner in 2012, scoring higher approval ratings than Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin. But Huckabee says it’s too early to focus on the next presidential election

“After the 2010 elections, we have to get through this cycle,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of people we need to get elected to the Congress and the Senate. I’ll spend most of my time here next year politically, helping other people.”

Huckabee stayed an extra half hour in Wichita to make sure everyone in line had a chance to meet him before leaving for another book signing in Springfield. His handlers say Monday’s turnout in Wichita was amongst the best for his book tour.
