WICHITA, Kansas -- From baking cookies to reading books, a group of caring Wichitans is behind a new group trying to provide experiences for kids who might not otherwise get them.
"I talked to my minister at church and she said 'I'm going down to Inter-Faith Ministries do you want to come with me?' And so I came on down and as soon as I walked through the door I thought, 'I wanna help,' explains Grandma Sherry Wallace.
That was back last August.
Now Sherry is a part of the newly formed Grandma-Squad at Inter-Faith Ministries.
"We take grandpas too, we take aunts and uncles, cousins, girl scouts, whoever wants to help us we're on board."
Whatever the relation, the goal is to provide kids in transition with experiences they may not get at home.
"It's reading books, it's taking 'em places."
In October they took kids to the pumpkin patch, and a Valentine's party is in the works.
"Birthday parties, we don't have anybody that has special birthday parties I think that would be fun."
It's not just the kids who benefit.
"Being with these kids, I'd like to take 'em all home. But I can't do that."
But she can be a friendly familiar face for kids in unfamiliar circumstances.
"I drive up here and they all yell 'Hi Grandma!' and that's fun, that's a good feeling."
If you'd like to join the squad, just call Inter-Faith Ministries to reserve your spot at their orientation meeting January 26th.
