TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) - Legislators in Kansas are hearing from educators and social service advocates who want them to raise taxes to close a budget shortfall.

The Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee began hearings Tuesday on proposals to raise sales and tobacco taxes.

Many lawmakers, particularly Republicans, are worried that raising taxes will hurt the economy.

The bill would raise the state's sales tax from 5.3 percent to 6.3 percent.

The measure also would increase the cigarette tax by 55 cents a pack, from 79 cents to $1.34. The tax on other tobacco products would rise from 10 percent to 40 percent.

The committee heard from public health advocates who said the tobacco tax increases not only would bolster state programs but discourage tobacco use as well.

Now days with technology being as advanced as it is there is not a single law, or raise in taxes that couldn't, be voted on by "We the people". There should be voting booths at the grocery store or some place. There is no reason what so ever that our votes shouldn't be counted on each and every issue. Could you imagine how much money it would save simply to have "We the people" decide our own fate?

Raise sales tax 2 cents and leave soda and cigarettes alone. Many, Many states have a 7 cent sales tax. Get us up there with them but quit friggin descriminating on our free choices. Quit taxing one person over another. And understand that the less government equals more "the people" if government would downsize it would save a lot of money. We could deal with alot less law makers, if we had more voting ballets. Let us vote on our laws, and our tax increases.... Then what do we need you for? Fire yourself and save us some money..

Higher TAXES would just add to the burden we, the tax payers, are already facing. Less government makes more sense to me.

Need to raise the sales tax 2 cents. GET EVERYBODY. Not just a certain group of people. Want to keep raising taxes on cigarettes then tell people where they can smoke them. That is communism. And add another 1 cent tax on gasoline.
