MULVANE, Kansas -- The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission reports that the casino has earned $6 million in the month of December.

That, after a stellar opening that resulted in just over $3 million in gaming revenue in just eight days.

"It has been so successful and so many people are going out there so I hope it continues to have a good crowd," said Sen. Jean Schodorf.  She believes more business means more money for the state.

The state's share of the earnings from the casino and the other state-owned casino in Dodge City will be used to pay off some debts early.

"We should use this increased revenue for its most important statutory purpose. And that is to pay down our debt," said Sen. Sam Brownback.

Sen. Schodorf also says the money will be used to reduce local property taxes and improve state infastructure. But even with the extra revenue, legislators are taking a wait-and-see approach about the ultimate success of the new casino.

Some of the concerns were that people would go to the casino and spend the money instead of going to the businesses in Wichita and we'll have to see if that happens," added Sen. Schodorf.

It's only been open for three weeks, but the Kansas Star Casino is already banking in a big way.

You all better get in there quick...I figure within a month or so, they'll change the odds to where they'll rake in more than $6mil in a weeks time until the public catches on and quit going. Of course they'll keep making a profit because alot of people will become addicted and then the Kansas tax payers will end up footing the bill on that too. "Just one more time...my lucks gotta change".

Paying of debt as the top priority? How about helping the schools throughout the area. Seems odd to me that after all of their budget shortfalls they are concerned with paying of debt early.

6 Million dollars earned in just a few days of operation. Approximately 4.5 million of that goes to the casino operator and only 1.32 million goes to the State of Kansas. Read the contract. How does this help the State?

I thought Sam Brownback was the Gov. and not a Sen. now?

I suppose this is like a voluntary tax. But gambling is inherently distructive. What a complete waste of money. This only means that a bunch of people lost a whole bunch of money. But in a free society everyone is entitled to their form of happiness.
