MULVANE, Kansas -- The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission reports that the casino has earned $6 million in the month of December.
That, after a stellar opening that resulted in just over $3 million in gaming revenue in just eight days.
"It has been so successful and so many people are going out there so I hope it continues to have a good crowd," said Sen. Jean Schodorf. She believes more business means more money for the state.
The state's share of the earnings from the casino and the other state-owned casino in Dodge City will be used to pay off some debts early.
"We should use this increased revenue for its most important statutory purpose. And that is to pay down our debt," said Sen. Sam Brownback.
Sen. Schodorf also says the money will be used to reduce local property taxes and improve state infastructure. But even with the extra revenue, legislators are taking a wait-and-see approach about the ultimate success of the new casino.
Some of the concerns were that people would go to the casino and spend the money instead of going to the businesses in Wichita and we'll have to see if that happens," added Sen. Schodorf.
It's only been open for three weeks, but the Kansas Star Casino is already banking in a big way.
