Wichita, Kansas -- Taking out the trash just got smaller. Lies Trash Service has been in business in Wichita for decades. No longer. This week the company is bought by the larger company, Waste Management.
"I'd heard the rumors that Lies could go to Waste Management," says John McRay of McRay Disposal. "But for the little guys like us, it makes sense to sell, I guess. Everything has gone up and it's just making it hard for the little man to stay in business. Fuel is up. Tires are expensive. Dumping fees are up and up."
While other independent haulers like McRay are talking about why the sale went through, Lies is not talking. David Lies did not return calls to KSN.
But Waste Management did sent out a letter to the media saying the 42-thousand Lies customers would not notice any change in service. No route changes are planned. Customers are not supposed to notice a thing. Only the name will change.
"Still makes me wonder about the future," says McRay. "Do I think there will come a day when there are only two big haulers in Wichita? Yep. I do. I really do. I really do because I just think that's what it's going to lead up to."
