WICHITA, Kansas - Machinists vote to reject the contract offer from Hawker Beechcraft in a 55 to 45 percent vote.

The contract for employees included a 10% pay cut, an increase in health care costs, and shut down several production lines leaving more than 800 union members out of a job.

"It's all about corporate greed," said Kevin Mahaffey, who voted for the contract. "They can’t get any more money for their product so they're going to take it out of our pockets."

"I think this is a low down deal the way they did things," added Ralph Paulk.  "I think their plans have been set for a long time.  This is just a sham."

Earlier this month an emergency meeting was called in Topeka where Governor Parkinson offered Hawker Beechcraft an incentive package to keep the company in Kansas.

That incentive deal is now off the table with the union's vote to reject a 7-year extension.

Hawker Beechcraft Corporation Chairman and CEO Bill Boisture issued this statement following the announcement Saturday afternoon: "In addition to the proposed incentive package from the State of Kansas, we presented the union with our best offer and are disappointed with the outcome of the vote. The company will continue exploring all options and making a series of business decisions in order to remain profitable and competitive in this smaller market."

Union leaders worry it’s now more likely HBC will leave Kansas.  But they say it appears the company asked its workers to sacrifice too much with little guarantee Hawker would stay if the contract was approved.

"They decided to hold on to what they have right now," said union spokesperson Rita Rogers.  "They feel they've had enough.  They spoke and we're going to respect their position and move on."

Where they move to isn't immediately clear.  Workers return to the job Monday with more than 9 months left on the current deal.  There are no plans right now to re-open negotiations with HBC

Union leaders say Hawker officials have recently received an offer to move the company to Louisiana.

Union workers suffer from acute moronitis. They are under the impression they can bully HBC into staying and giving them better terms. I guess when all these idiots are unemployed they will cry about evil HBC and how they stole the jobs away. On the other hand, HBC should have broken the union when it had the chance. They aren't required by law to put up with strikes. If it was me and the union morons walked out, I'd just hire someone else, because there are plenty of non-union machinists who would love to take that job without blackmailing the company for it. They should do it now, and break the union for good. Let them be jobless, prideful SOBs. Maybe when they can't feed themselves they'll think, "Gee, maybe I should have taken that pay cut and sucked it up."

Hello all, My wife is from Wichita, though we live in Ohio. What you all have to understand is that by voting what the company offered you have just successfully negociated yourselfs out of a job. Ohioo has lost over 400,000 jobs primarily because of the pervasive union mindset. Those of you with a 12th grade education making 25.00 dollars an hour plus benefits, have had it very good.None of you could possibly replicate the pay you have anywhere else. The company must remain competitive, and profitable. The plain truth is they could move the company to Louisiana, and pay those people 18.00 an hour, and they would be gratefull to have a job. You must understand that if these jobs leave there will"none" to replace them. Here in Ohio,we will likely never fully recover because no company will locate themselves here because of the union mindset. The bitter truth is,You`ve had it very good for a very long time.but now, because your union has led you to believe that your labor is worth what your paid you have probably lost the best job you could ever have. And you "cynsconcern" this mentality of uper management being at fault because they make a good deal more money than you.Chances are,you and any of the machinists dont have the education,or the mental capacity to run this company. Many of them can go elsewhere to find a good cause of their education, engineers, and corporate executives have marketable skills. You have none. I love Wichita because it isnt like the eastern third of the country,or so I thought.

The drama that comes with the aviation in Wichita has taken up enough of our time and effert. These folks whom have lived this life for years and years, taken the good paychecks, the good benifits and claims now that the companies are evil make me tired. You voted no to work, you voted no to a job. I have worked since I turned 15 making my life better and better with each year. I have worked jobs that dont make me happy, that seem like the CEOs dont care but you know what It Was A Job! Dont come asking for a hand out. You have made your bed and maybe now you should be forced to lay in it. Stand proud and tall as classylady said. Dont matter who proud and tall you stand your still going to have to pay your electric bill and put food on the table. Hope that pride can do that for you. KSN lets move on to more deserving stories.

Classylady- If Hawker is the bad guy and had no intention of staying and you all are so smart as to have uncovered this gigantic conspiracy, then why oh why did you play into their hands and vote the offer down? Why didn't you vote to accept the contract so that Hawker could leave AFTER you all did your part, thereby exposing them as the bad horrible evil greedy corporate slimeballs your making them out to be? Hmmmmmmmm..... maybe because saying Hawker had no intent of staying is the easy way to point the finger at someone else. Those of you who voted the contract down- take responsibility for your actions. Don't whine and cry and play poor pitiful me, and make excuses of how your lot in life is everyone else's fault but your own. You made the decision. Those of you who voted to accept it, you have my respect for trying to do what was right, and I wish you the best. Thanks btw 1945boomer- and I agree that Wichita needs to diversify. Maybe that will be the silver lining is that the city will realize we need to diversify, and be successful in doing so. I'm being sickeningly optomistic there I know, but hey, who knows?

@cynsconcern: All salaried professional employees have been on a raise freeze for 3 years, they have paid the higher health insurance rates all along, and have had there matching 401k suspended. Represented employees have been insulated from all this due to their contract. All the proposed contract is doing is asking the represented employees to share the burden the professional employees have been shouldering all along.
