WICHITA, KANSAS -- What started as a burglary report ended with a new concern for police on Tuesday.

A resident in the 8700 block of East Brookhollow noticed two females suspiciously looking in several mailboxes and walking in the area earleir that day.

Mail theft is not the type of crime many expect to happy in Wichita, but one that is on authorities minds this type of year, more than ever.

"Officers, upon making that report, have noticed an increase in mail thefts in that area," said Lt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police.

Mail can be an easy target for thieves. According to the Postal Service, residents should be aware, but certainly not scared.

"We do not have a lot of mail theft in the Wichita area. It's a very isolate, we have very isolated cases there," said postal inspector Paul Mezzanotte.

However, in light of the most recent case,  Mezzanotte offers these tips to keep your mail safe:

Make sure to clean out your mailbox daily.

If you're extra concerned, a P.O. Box at the Post Office is your safest option.

And when sending outgoing mail, use the secure blue Postal Service bins.

Police are looking for two suspects in the case:

Two females in their mid-20's
- One with dark brown hair
-5'7, 140 lbs
- Left in mid-90's white Ford Taurus

Stealing mail is a federal offense, and police are asking for help in locating these women. If you have any information, you're asked to call (316) 267-2111.

Mail theft is one of the easiest and most common ways theives obtain your sensitive information for identity theft. They can find bank account statements, credit card offers, and other sensitive financial documents all in your incoming mail. To protect yourself from the fastest growing crime in the nation, use a high security locked mailbox like the Mail Boss, available at your local Ace Hardware or online at mailboss.net. @OneBuyMom - the USPS probably won't let you do that but you can switch to a locking mailbox so long as you pick one that is USPS approved (like the Mail Boss) and install it 41-45" above road surface and 6-8" from the street front!

Mail theft is gaining in popularity all across the country. As a homeowner you definitely need to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to mail theft. By not having a locking mailbox you're basically giving a stranger the key to the front door of your home. I bought one 6 years ago after my mail was stolen and won't ever be without one again. A locking mailbox is a cheap price to pay for the security and piece of mind it brings. Jay G. www.lockingmailboxstore.com

I just had checks sent to me unsolicited by my investment firm stolen from my mailbox. The thieves got $319 before I noticed. If you don't need checkbooks, ask your institutions NOT to send you any unsolicited. Check your statements once a week, at least.

I have reported mail missing from my mailbox twice in the past couple years, I requested many times that I would like to be able to put up a house box instead of a rural box and they wont reply to my request and my house isn't but a car and a half length from the street.
