WICHITA, Kansas – A half dozen residents at a Wichita apartment complex are moving out or in the process of leaving. The problem for some: mold and water.

There was a big flood at the Village Park Rockborough Apartments and Townhomes back on April 27th. Now, some residents say after two months of dealing with water damage, and in some instances mold, they’re just moving out.

Patty Schoenhofer says the water damage was extensive in her bathroom with leaking water that caused mold. And she says in the basement there are even bigger problems: spiders and bugs that have never been exterminated and mold from the flooding.

“And we found out that we have living, feeding and dying bacteria and fungi growing in our hvac unit,” Schoenhofer said.

Patty isn’t alone. Her neighbors in building 12 say they’re dealing with similar problems and are moving out.

”It's moldy on both sides,” said Ryan Canale. “It's got water lines. We've talked to maintenance about it. And, hey, our water's been leaking for the past two months. And, still nothing.”

“The basement's flooded and I was going, ‘Oh, all those wedding presents,’ it’s a mess,” said Karen Tittenberg.

“And every time we call them they say they'll send someone right over. But no one's come,” said resident Greg Baker.

As for the apartment manager, they say the flood from two months ago hit 70 apartments and building 12 is the last in line to be fixed.

“Everything is getting fixed and our insurance is taking care of it,” said Chris Willenburg, with Rockborough Apartments. “This is unfortunate, but building 12 is just the last one to get done.”

And while maintenance says they’re working on the problem, some aren’t waiting. They say two months is too much and they’re moving out.

The apartment operations manager says he doesn’t like to see people move out, but he says he’s working on the issue as fast as possible.
