Newton animal shelter housing 42 purebred dogs

NEWTON, Kansas (AP) - The Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton is hoping to quickly find homes for 42 purebred puppies and dogs who arrived after a raid on a breeder.

The breeds include such dogs as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians and Yorkshire terrier.

They dogs were part of 111 dogs that were seized last week from a licensed Butler County breeder. The remaining dogs were distributed to other shelters in northeast Kansas.

Debra Duncan, of the Kansas Animal Health Department, says the breeder has consistently violated sanitation and crowding rules. She says the breeder kept 40 dogs but faces a $10,000 fine if she doesn't improve her operation.

Jack Brand, spokesman for the Newton shelter, says it comfortably holds 50 dogs. Some of the new dogs have already gone to foster homes to alleviate overcrowding.
