WICHITA, Kansas (KSN Pinpoint Weather Center) -- The winter season in Kansas has been very dry. Some areas of the state are nearly eight inches below normal for snowfall this year. That will change by Friday and into the weekend.
A storm system is taking shape in the desert Southwest and is headed toward Kansas. This will bring much cooler temperatures as well as rain and snow to the Sunflower State. The initial effects of this system are expected to arrive late Thursday night in Western Kansas with light showers and sprinkles. However, by Friday afternoon, most of Kansas will see widespread moisture. For those in Central Kansas, rain and even some thunderstorms can be expected, while those in the West, particularly in NorthWest Kansas, can expect some significant snowfall. Snow amounts could top out around 10-12 inches by Saturday morning in extreme NorthWest Kansas where blizzard conditions are expected. Lower snowfall amounts are expected further to the South and East. At this time, measurable snowfall is not expected in the Wichita Metro area.
With as dry as conditions have been, minor flooding could become an issue in the areas that receive the soaking rains, whereas blowing and drifting snow will impact travel for the areas expected to receive the snowfall. The KSN PinPoint Weather Center will continue to track this incoming storm and bring you the latest forecast as the system continues to evolve.
