'Regis and Kelly' runner arrives in Kansas
WICHITA, Kansas – A man running cross-country for the “Live with Regis and Kelly” show is going through Kansas right now. He talked live on the show this morning about the biggest challenged he faces here and across the nation.
Runner Dean Karnazes got a frosty first impression of Cullison, Kansas -- the town’s name was actually misspelled on the Regis and Kelly Show. But the welcome from for Karnazes was much warmer. "As bad as the weather's been in Kansas, the people have been terrific,” he said. “I've had a lot of people on the roadside bringing me hot chicken soup on the side of the road. I've been signing a lot of copies of my book, so the people have made up for the weather.” He’s running from coast to coast – 40 to 50 miles a day – to raise awareness of the campaign Action for Healthy Kids, which encourages children to get outside and exercise. "I've still got about 1,600 miles to go, so I'm just going to take it one day, actually one step at a time, and hopefully in about 37 to 38 more days, that's where I'll be in New York City."The finish line is actually at Regis and Kelly’s studio, where they checked on his progress."How many calories do you consume, that's my question?” asked guest host Lisa Rinna. “I've been eating upwards of 10,000 calories a day, and I've still lost about five pounds,” Karnazes answered back. "Some Girl Scouts brought me some Thin Mints out on the road. Oh man, those are pretty good!"And many people are joining him – at least for a few miles. And when he comes through Goddard in a couple days, he hopes hundreds will run or just walk with him."It's all about inclusion; it's all about that first step, so come on out,” he said. ”I'd love to see you Thursday and let's go run a 5K.” To learn more about his run and how to catch up with him in Kansas, click here.
