SALINA, Kansas -- Officers at the Saline County Sheriff's Office are training in a life-size simulated course to help them prepare for situations in the field.
"It's as close to real world training without being in the real world," said Capt. Roger Soldan, Saline County Jail.
In fact, there are more than a thousand different scenarios, and all of those have multiple outcomes. Those range from violent to non-violent situations.
"Some are shooting scenarios, and some are not shooting scenarios. We can change them to go to one or another depending how the participant is doing," said Jim Hughes, Saline County K-9 officer.
Meaning, if an officers is communicating well with the suspect, the chances of a situation diffusing itself is more likely.
"It's vital not only for officer safety, but to public safety. If we have officers trained well, it saves offices lives and people we are protecting."
More than 100 officers will participate in the training course next week.
