WICHITA, Kansas - 51-year-old Scott Roeder appeared in a jail jumpsuit to hear the charges against him on Tuesday. In its complaint, the state charges that Roeder committed first-degree murder when he allegedly shot and killed Doctor George Tiller, and that Roeder also committed two counts of aggravated assault.
"This is the first step in the criminal process in our community," District Attorney Nola Foulston said.
Foulston told reporters that her office was not seeking the death penalty, because the crime does not meet any of the seven aggregate factors of Kansas' death penalty law.
"He always knew that there was a target on him, and that didn't stop him," Willow Eby said.
Eby volunteered at Tiller's clinic, and believes the doctor knew his life was on the line.
Eby say through Tuesday's court proceedings. She says she was upset by the fact, in her opinion, Roeder showed no remorse, and only talked about when he would get an attorney.
"A little entitled," Eby said. "That's what I would say. What can we give him and how much? How fast can he get what he wants?"
As for the case surrounding Tiller's murder, the district attorney says her office will have no further releases unless there is a major change in the case.
Foulston was asked if she believed Roeder acted alone. Her response was this.
"At this particular point in time, there is one particular person charged in this case," Foulston said.
Roeder's next appearance in court is set for June 16th. That, however, could be moved depending on Roeder's defense.
