WICHITA, Kansas – The start of school is just around the corner and as many parents are hitting the stores stocking up on school supplies, the Salvation Army and Spirit AeroSystems are doing their part to help those who can’t afford the basics.
Pallets of school supplies were unloaded for kids in need Friday – supplies that can be a little overwhelming for parents. With so many people out of work in this economy, officials say the need for the basics this year is expected to be great.
“Last year we had a 35 percent increase from the year before, and we anticipate at least the same numbers this year,” said Major Douglas Rowland, city commander with the Salvation Army.
The supplies were donated by employees at Spirit.
“We collected over a 1,000 backpacks full of supplies this year,” said Michelle Anderson with Spirit AeroSystems.
The company raised more than $36,000 to help families in need.
“We had all sorts of volunteers yesterday in our warehouse sorting all the supplies and everyone always has a lot of fun, and everyone's always surprised at the amount of supplies that they see come in,” Anderson said.
It’s not only making a difference in school, but in the lives of the kids.
“Last year we had a small child open up his backpack and said, ‘Wow, a new ruler,’ and he got excited over just a ruler in his backpack,” Major Rowland said.
Distribution will begin August 5th through the 13th. Those wondering if they qualify and where they can go to pick up donations can call 263-2769. Call the same number if you are wishing to make a donation.
