WICHITA, Kansas - Dozens of Planned Parenthood supporters demonstrated Friday against what they call legislative attacks on women's rights. The supporters say a budget plan to defund the program will affect thousands of women who use their services.
Demonstrators said the program is in jeopardy of losing $335,000 for its services.
The Kansas House has passed its version of the 2012 budget which diverts funds from Planned Parenthood.
"It definitely could affect the services, the hours, and the access for women in this community to access low cost birth control,” said Kari Ann Rinker, with the Kansas National Organization for Women.
Demonstrators said Planned Parenthood is under attack on the national and state level, and that opponents use abortion to demonize the service.
“It's really a preventative healthcare measure, more so than a lot of the people that want to say its an evil organization,” said Shanna Crowe, who helped organize the demonstration.
Similar measures have passed during the Sebelius and Parkinson administrations, but were vetoed. Many believe that won't happen for the next fiscal year.
"This is a very serious issue and they will attempt a budget proviso in the state of Kansas,” Rinker added.
Planned Parenthood offers services like breast exams, pap smears, birth control, and sometimes abortion services.
Only one clinic in Kansas offers abortions. The demonstrators believe efforts to defund the organization are being led by pro-life supporters, even though it's against the law for federal funds to go towards abortions.
"This totally is not an abortion issue, it’s not for pro-life or pro choice,” said Robby Crowe, a rally organizer. “It’s mainly a thing for having rights.”
The legislature will reconvene from their break on Wednesday. Governor Brownback says he has never supported federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
