MULVANE, Kansas (KSN) -- After years of referendum votes, cancelled commitments, and politicking over placement, it took just months for a temporary casino to finish construction.

Friday, casino officials gave the media a first look inside.

To give the facility a Kansas feel, developers used earthy color tones and put plenty of local art on the walls.

But the real draw is their 1300 slot machines and 32 table games.  "It's just like Las Vegas," said Mike Dickson, director of casino operations.  "We're going to have blackjack, we're going to have roulette, we're going to have craps."

And casino officials hope they're going to have 2 million customers in their first year once they open the doors to the public on the day after Christmas.

Construction is underway on the permanent casino building.  Plans call for it to be ready in about a year.

In the meantime, customers will gamble on the floor of what will become a multi-use arena.

Even though it's a temporary location, casino officials believe its good enough to give Kansans a taste of Vegas in their own backyard.

"I really think for an interim temporary casino it came out just spectacular," said general manager Scott Cooper.

Cooper says 1600 people were hired for construction and 500 people now have jobs inside the casino.

A select group of invite-only guests will be allowed inside the Kansas Star Casino on Dec. 16 for a test run.  State regulators will be at the event and watching closely.

If they say the casino passes the test, the Kansas Star Casino will open Dec. 26 at 8 a.m.

I do not care to gamble at the slot, BJ or etc. I am glad the casino is here. I do like to play bingo as others do, is there going to be any bingo games at this casino, or do we have to keep going to Okla?

I'm getting excited for the opening of the casino. I'm employed there and to anyone that thinks that it's going to ruin the area, people ruin themselves, not the business. This casino is providing me (as well as several others I work with) enough money to live on when we couldn't find jobs anywhere else. I'm great full for the casino and everything it has to offer. And when it comes to addictions, the casino actually helps people with gambling addictions to get them help.

tracyl gambling can be addictive, so anyone who already have an addictive personallity can easily gamble there lifes away and still not kill anyone. I would worn anyone that has a hard time controlling them selves not to go gambling anywhere. If you must go leave all plastic and checks home, cash only, and only what you can lose.

It is the selfishness of the religious people that feel hurt by something taking their bingo money and them trying to play big brother. If they could only worry about themselves and allow us to have freedom of choice. Strip bars, lottery, dog track didnt ruin our city did it? This will stimulate our economy in our area with jobs and revenue from outside traffic. The problem gamblers are not caused by the casinos. They are caused from the people that dont have any common sense and spend money they shouldnt be. Not alot different from the ones the go through the drive through at Mcdonalds that know they shouldnt but instead just keep packing on the pounds. Stop playing big brother and allow us freedom of choice. Tracyl has it right on her post but everyone just wants to blame anything they dont agree with.. Casino here I come

RealPerson have you ever seen a Kansas lottery commercial??? they are on tv every day. and by the way Kansas State run Casinos and state lotteries pay every dime of the Gambling help line, granted it's not much for what they take in, but taxpayers dont spend a dime, but one thing you said is very true-- Dont gamble any money you cant aford to loss, if you cant put it in a ashtray and set it on fire dont go!!! and belive me nobody will make you, if you go out on a night on the town your going to spend $$$, but a night at the Star you might make some $$$ just remember the house has the edge, more on Slots. Less on BJ and craps leave youe debit card at home only take the cash you want to gamble with and have fun. LOL a Casino near Wichita is nothing to fall to your knees and pray for God to save your soul about, if it is your about 8 years to late.

Come on people Casinos have running to the north and south from us for years, KC,Topeka, and all the State and Indian Casinos in Oklahoma, This is not our 1st rodeo with gambling, We have had Wichita Greyhound park, Bingo, State run Lottery, pull tabs, scratch tickets. and all the other ways to gamble over the years like poker, pool games, darts... the list just keep going on, so now that the New Star Casino is only 15min from Wichita, as to the hour away from the Casinos in Oklahoma (7-8years) we are all going to just now lose our souls to the addiction of gambling?? that just plain Nuts, were just going to save alittle on gas, and put some money back into our state for a change, not OK.

I have not read the laws, but I can not believe they would allow tax dollars to promote gambling. I would assume they run it like a business and use the profits to advertise. For creating jobs, tell the over 400 just hired by the casino, and I am sure many more in the comunity to handle the surge in people driving there. The local gas stations of Mulvane and many more places should see a huge increase in people not driving all the way to Oklahoma now! Gambling IS an addiction, just like drugs and alcohol. I believe that casinos must pay a % to funds to help people cope with this. Do NOT take more than you are willing to LOSE. Only a few people get Lucky. Quick math for you, that I figured out in Vegas.. In Vegas the slots say 98% return. So to me this means I lose 2% of my money every spin...
