WICHITA, Kansas (AP) - A union official says contract talks between Spirit AeroSystems and its engineering union took "a grim and disappointing turn" when discussions turned toward benefits and compensation.

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace says negotiations continue this week. SPEEA Midwest director Bob Brewer says the union has a tough challenge ahead.

The current contract covering 710 Spirit engineers expires July 11.

Spirit spokeswoman Debbie Gann says the company is confident an agreement will be reached.
