WICHITA -- Some volunteers from Louisiana are helping Wichita women, fleeing from domestic violence.
Twelve high school girls from Sisters of St. Joseph Academy in Baton Rouge, are in Wichita this week, helping to renovate a home for the StepStone Transitional Housing Program. There are twelve homes in the area, made available to women and children who are escaping a violent situation. They may stay in the home for up to 2 years, after getting out of a local shelter.
The volunteers put on a fresh coat of paint, cleaned up the yard, helped strip away old carpet and gave the home a new look. A mother and her kids will move into the home next week.
"It feels really good, it makes you feel at the end of the day that you have a purpose and that just that you're doing good for others, its just a positive feeling overall," said Anne Cooper, one of the volunteers.
The housing program is run by the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent in Wichita.
