WICHITA, Kansas -- Wichita police are releasing the latest crime statistics for the city. Chief Norman Williams says that Wichita is generally on par with its average for most major crimes,  but there are some increases worth noting.

Wichita saw 27 homicides in 2011, compared to 18 in 2010, but investigators say that year was unusually low. The five-year average for homicides is 29. But police are concerned about the increase in domestic violence homicides. In 2011 there were 10, compared to six the year before. The five-year average is 5.8 a year.

Investigators say its important to note that individual years can fluctuate, but the more accurate way to interpret the numbers is to compare them to the five-year average.
"Looking at that five year it really gives us a clear indication as where we are as an organization, where we are as far as accomplishing our goal for a safe and secure community," said Williams.

Auto thefts were up considerably in 2011, with 1802 reports. That compares to 1424 in 2010 and a five-year average of 1745. Investigators say that the majority of vehicles were recovered.
