Wichita, Kansas - A Wichita church is responding this week after a Florida pastor vowed to burn hundreds of copies of the Quran on the Nine anniversary of September 11th.
"We have no intention of canceling," says Florida Pastor Terry Jones.
Jones still plans on hosting the burning of the Quran this weekend, despite calls from around the country for him to change his mind.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and General Patraeus have called for Jones to step down from the idea. Many in Wichita are joining in that call.
"We will have a day of prayer to make a statement," says Reverend Gary Blaine, of the Wichita University Congregational Church. "This is an absolute must. We have to take a stand and let people know."
Blaine, along with other Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders will be at the University Congregational Church Saturday at 7 p.m. in north Wichita.
"Prayers for peace is the theme," says Blaine.
Those in the Islamic community are thrilled to be taking part.
"Well, the Quran is a book of peace," says Hussam Madi, of the Islamic Society of Wichita. "It came from a revelation from God. "We all share common links. The Quran shares many fundamental principles with Christianity."
While Wichita organizers point to a lesson of tolerance this weekend in Kansas, they invite everyone interested in religious freedom and peace to go to the prayer session at University Congregational Church.
