WICHITA, Kansas -- Last night Wichita experienced a very rare weather phenomenon known as a “Heat Burst.” At 12:22 a.m. the temperature at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport was 85 degrees. At 12:44 the temperature spiked to 102 degrees. This was a 17 degree increase in only 20 minutes. Winds also gusted between 50 and 60 MPH. The heat burst winds and temperatures rapidly dissipated as they spread across Sedgwick and Southern Butler Counties.

A heat burst is caused when rain falls into very dry air, high up in the atmosphere. The rain quickly evaporates as it falls through the dry parcel of air and that parcel cools rapidly. This dense mass falls rapidly toward the ground, heating up as it compresses. When this hot ball of air hits the ground it spreads out in every direction creating very strong, warm and dry winds.

About an hour before the heat burst, wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour battered the Wichita metro area. This was due to outflow winds from severe weather south of the city, and not related to the heat burst.

For those wondering about the process of sinking air warming, without a vessel, or smashing in to the ground, look up adiabatic warming for your answers.

I was told about this phenomenon occurring last week, and was glad I found out more about it by researching this site. I have to say, though, that in reading the comments posted concerning this event, these have to be the most inane and, frankly, scary comments I have read in some time. Having moved away from Kansas 17 years ago, I've defended the midwestern mindset to those I meet from other parts of the country. Perhaps I was in error. Comments like most of those listed here only serve to reinforce the negative stereotype many have about Kansans. All I can say is shame on most of the posters.

Actually it was the release of energy caused by a mass of wizards leaving Wichita after a broom racing event. Too much firewhiskey and they forgot to go in small groups and apperated all at once. The accidental magic reversal squad failed to contain the incident properly and some muggles reported the temperature changes to the media.

Heat bursts are as much a mystery now as tornadoes were in 1960. Their cause is a unproven theory. Plz be more precise in your reporting. There is enough crap keeping people distracted from important issues.

Such things happen pretty often in mountainous country, but are extremely rare elsewhere. I've heard it called a "Chinook wind" but it goes by other names as well. The column of cool air falls, and doesn't heat until it is compressed against the ground by the falling air above it. The heated air is pushed outward on the ground by the pressure behind it, and then rises normally. The process continues until the cause of the downdraft ceases. It's weird, but it happens naturally.

The air compresses? What is the vessel that is being used to contain the column of air to allow for the compression? If you push down on a column of air, as you are suggesting and nothing is containing it, to allow for it to build up pressure, then it will follow the path of least resistance! For that matter, what is the source of the head pressure? Gravity? You are presenting the posit that gravity along with the weight of the saturated air has the potential energy to raise a significant(read millions of cubic feet of air) by 17 degrees!!! You ever hear of Occham's Razor? Don't they teach scientists the Principle of Parsimony anymore? They did when I went to college, but I first learned it in my high school Latin class. You might investigate that sometime, as it has been around for about 800 years or so. The scientists that I know use it for null hypothesis testing. The reason I bring this up is that there was a M2 CME approx. 24 hrs prior to this occurring. So I would present is it more likely that a large event, occurring on the Sun, traveling a 500+ km/s with a density of 8 cm/3 of protons might have the kinetic energy to give you the results you are looking to explain? http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ace/MAG_SWEPAM_3d.html

I heard it was caused by a jet plane which had been stranded on the tarmac for six hours at Mid Continent Airport; after they finally opened the cabin door to let out the famished passengers.

A question for the weather man. We all agree that air colder than the air around it falls and air that is hotter than the air around it rises. Therefore, when this mass of air suddenly gets cold it falls. HOWEVER, when the compression heats the air to the same temperature as the air around it, WHY WOULD IT CONTINUE TO FALL?

Weather manipulation......all over the country rings in radar are making already bad weather more likly to be severe.......here is an example ..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uifqGwdh9RA&feature=youtube_gdata_player This next video is a documentary on the technology http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-VMfzO94M0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
