WICHITA, Kansas – Shut down nearly seven years ago, the popular Tanya’s Soup Kitchen will reopen this spring, bringing old favorites back with it.

In the heart of the Douglas Design District across from the Donut Whole, you’ll soon see a familiar name gracing the marquee. Tanya’s Soup Kitchen is coming back.

“It's really big news, I’m super excited about it,” said owner Tanya Tandoc.

Tandoc closed her first restaurant in 2004 when her lease wasn’t renewed. Now, nearly seven years later, she’s bringing back the Wichita staple to a new location and with a new member added to her team – her brother, Warren.

“I feel lucky, incredibly lucky,” he said.

Warren Tandoc is also a chef and while he can’t wait to get in the kitchen, his focus, as is Tanya’s, will be on customer service.

“I think we're all feeling that responsibility and embracing it as part of why we want to do this so we can more fully embody the fact that we make food for people that we love,” he said.

And they make food that Tanya’s loyal customers love.

“They remember so many specific things about the restaurant,” said Tanya. “We're not going to change very much of the menu. We might add a sandwich or two. Everything will stay the same and I think the prices will stay the same.”

While the menu at the new location will stay the same, the way customers are served will be changing. Instead of someone waiting on tables, customers will go to a counter to order and runners will bring the food out.

“It'll just make it faster and easier,” said Tanya.

Faster and easier to get customers the food they’ve missed all these years.

Tanya’s Soup Kitchen will be located at 1725 E. Douglas. While there’s still no opening date set, Tanya says she hopes to be back in business by April.

I was so excited to hear that Tanya's was coming back. My mother and I went today and were HORRIBLY disappointed. I ordered my usual sandwich, the Milano. It was NOTHING like it used to be. Different bread, half of the meat, one small bite of lettuce and barely any of the spread. It was definitely not worth $9. The soup choices were also not that great. Two tomato soups, a vegetarian soup and clam chowder. I saw the list from yesterday was much better. My mother ordered a salad which was supposed to have Apricot Chutney, and they forgot to include it. The salad also was half old rotten lettuce that we had to throw out once we got it home. We had to order "to go" because we had my son with us. The tables are so close together, it would be impossible to use a highchair and not bother those around you. Finally, after the huge disappointment of lunch, I was so excited for my crisp. It was supposed to be a peach/cherry crisp and I have such fond memories of the HUGE dessert with fresh fruit. Well, I opened the box and it was about 1/3 of the size it used to be. The caramel sauce was still the same, so I was excited to warm it up and enjoy it. But, with the first bite I was once again disappointed. What used to be a huge, delicious fresh fruit crisp is now a small, 99% filler, hardly any fruit crisp. There was maybe a few pieces of peach and one cherry in the entire dessert and I paid $5 for this. Definitely not worth it. To top it all off, as we're standing in line I see the kitchen and a woman dips her fingers in the soup kettle without a glove or anything and is picking out something and wiping on her apron. I almost threw up! But, that's why I didn't order soup! I sure wish it was like it used to be. We will never go back.
