WICHITA, Kansas -- Hot on the heels of the Wichita State University's Final Four success, investigators say a now former Wichita State basketball player, who was part of that NCAA trip is accused of sexual assault.
Having lost to the Louisville Cardinals in the national semi-finals, the WSU men's basketball team and their journey to get to the Final Four outshine the defeat.
But nearly three weeks after that match up, a now former WSU basketball player is accused of rape.
"No arrest have been made in the case and no current players are under investigation," said Lt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police Department.
Wichita Police say there was a get together late Saturday night at the home of a current WSU basketball player.
It's unclear how many people or players were at the get together.
Investigators say the player accused of the crime has no eligibility remaining therefore won't be playing at WSU next year.
The 20-year-old female victim who is not a student at the university filed a report Sunday morning.
She was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
The incident report shows she was in the process of waking up when the alleged crime happened.
"WSU basketball team has been fully cooperating with the investigation," said Lt. Nolte. "At this time it's an ongoing investigation."
As WSU students prepare for upcoming finals, news of the allegation is slowly spreading on campus and many students say the news is quite shocking.
"I couldn't really believe it at first," said Brady Reynolds, WSU student. "Because you kind of hear about it happening at other colleges, but you just don't think it could happen here."
"It's really surprising," said Jett Jurgens, WSU student. "I don't know any of the basketball players they all seem to the public to be outstanding guys and everyone here is real proud of them."
In response to the investigation, Wichita State released a statement saying quote, "Wichita State University and the Athletic Department take this situation very seriously and are cooperating with the Wichita Police Department."
The statement by Athletic Director Eric Sexton goes on to say, "At this time it is important to let the investigative process take its course."
"It's almost unbelievable with the reputation that we have here at Wichita State with the players going on and doing good things with their career," said Sesily Jackson, WSU student.
No arrests have been made and no charges were filed at this time.
