ABILENE, Kansas - For Merrill Beaushaw, Monday was a big day.
He celebrated his 100th birthday with his three children as well as several of his grand and great-grandchildren at the Hitching Post in Abilene.
Through his time, Beaushaw has had some interesting life experiences.
"Went to World War II and was overseas."
Beaushaw served three years in the war as an automobile mechanic with duty in Italy, Germany and Africa.
He also saw his share of battles being one of the first to land at Anzio Beach.
For his service, Beaushaw received several awards, including a good conduct medal and bronze service arrowhead.
After the war, he kept up his trade as a mechanic before working for the Cloud County Highway Department, but even though Beaushaw stayed busy, his family came first.
"He was busy, but he still took time for his family. Family was very important to him," said Gloria Coss, daughter.
As his family gathered to wish him another happy birthday, Beaushaw said he's hopeful to be able to celebrate several more birthdays, but now, he'll take things one day at a time.
"It never changes, I just go one year to the next, just another day."
Beaushaw will have another reason to celebrate in September when he and his wife, Ester, celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary.
