CHENEY, Kansas -- While some clean up the mess left from Sunday night’s storms, the holiday weekend ended in uncertainty for one Wichita family. Their loved one was still missing at Cheney Lake.
It is easy to tell just how strong winds were Sunday night based on the damage at Cheney Lake. That means if the missing man’s body is still in the lake, it could be anywhere.
By land, air and water, searchers took to Cheney Lake Monday to find a missing man over 9,500 acres of water.
"While you’re still trying to manage a disaster of straight-line winds and campers and boats that are sunk all over the place," said Park Ranger Jeff Ostlund.
The first sign of progress came when searchers found the man’s boat capsized on the lake, the ignition still on. It is also the first sign of reality -- that a 38-year-old Wichita man has suffered a grim fate.
"We’re always hopeful but it is going to be tough to find," said Scott Hanzlicek, rescue worker.
With hope in tow, searchers took to the waters. Their best assets were search dogs, capable of finding a person, even on the water.
"As soon as they get scent on the wind then they’ll put their heads over the side of the boat and they’ll source we’re it’s coming out the strongest and then they’ll let us know," said Sandi Stelz, dog rescue team.
But no matter how valuable a tool the canine’s are, the area to cover is simply overwhelming with barely a lead to help narrow the search.
"We recovered the boat and we know where that was, but the way the winds were last night it could have started anywhere on the lake.
As the day closed, so did the search. But officials promise they will do it all again Tuesday.
"We are going to be out there and we will keep looking until we find this individual," said Jerry Schmidt, park manager.
Based on the damage at the marina, officials thought they would have to close the park Tuesday but they said they made so much progress cleaning up Monday they do expect to be open.
