WICHITA, Kansas, Oct. 5, 2007 -- Just 30 minutes a week is all it takes to make a big difference in a child's life. Wichitans are learning that exact lesson at local schools.
Although 12-year-old Edward is a little shy, it's apparent that his big brother, Byron McSwain, is one of the best things that has ever happened to him.
"He's my favorite big brother," said Edward. "Nobody has been with me longer than him."
Byron and Edward were paired as part of the Big's in Schools program three years ago. But it wasn't an easy start.
"You know it was -- you could hear the crickets going when we first met," said Byron. "He didn't know me and I didn't know him."
But Byron didn't give up and neither did Edward. Their perseverance has paid off. When asked if he thought he was a better student and a better person because of Byron, Edward replied, "A way better person."
"Knowing that Edward didn't have a father figure in his life, I knew how important it was to just sit down and have someone to talk to," said Byron.
The best thing about the Big's in Schools program is that its so easy to work into your schedule. It takes, maybe, 30 to 45 minutes a week. You go to school, meet with your little and perhaps lose to him in a game of chess. It's a small investment in time but the benefits are tremendous.
"I think I get back more than I give, to be honest with you," said Byron. "I have a son that is seven and it gives me a chance to look into the future and see what the kids are going through at this age. It's a good reward. It's a good reward."
And perhaps the best reward of all is a better shot at a brighter future for this 12 year old boy.
