Wednesday's Child: Kyle

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, Feb. 6, 2008 -- Strolling around the zoo is just one of many fun activities seven-year-old Kyle and his Big Brother, Glenn Webb, do together. Glenn always makes sure there is something fun and interesting planned each week.

"We do a lot of different things together and most of the things we do don't take a lot of time. They are things I normally do," said Glenn. "Sometimes we'll do something out of the way. We'll do something special for Kyle."

Recently, they had the chance to get up close and personal with some creepy critters. For story time, Kyle chose a book about his favorite animal -- a bear.

"When the fish come up, they reach in the water and catch it," said Kyle.

The two have been matched for almost a year and a half but Glenn admits he was hesitant at first to participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program because he didn't think he'd have time.

"I started the process because I committed to doing it. But once I started doing it, it became giving back. I always wanted to do it, but I always felt I was too busy."

Glenn works for Cargill, who has been a huge supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters. They encourage employees like Glenn to take an active roll in the program and Glenn couldn't be happier.

"It's making a difference in somebody's life that will positively affect their life, and they will never forget you and be grateful for it."

And it seems Kyle certainly is grateful. He loved his time at the zoo. He said his favorite part was watching the chimpanzees.

"Especially the grandpa because he was just sitting there scratching underneath his armpit," said Kyle.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas is always looking for volunteers for its program. Whether it's a little help with schoolwork, a trip to a museum, or even a little monkeying around, you can make a big impact on a child's life, even with just a little bit of time each week. Who knows? You may make a big difference like Glenn has.
