Giving a Little one hour per week

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, September 3, 2008 – Bull Rupp of Cargill Meats Solutions and his Little Brother Marcos, met up for lunch and a game of checkers.

Bill visits with Marcos once a week during his lunch hour. It doesn’t seem like a lot of time, but Bill not only works at Cargill – he’s also the president. He encourages employees to volunteer as well.

"Usually, you're asking people to pull money out of their pocket, and this time we're just asking people to give up an hour of their time once a week to come to the school and spend lunch with a young person and do some mentoring,” Rupp said.

Bill admits he didn’t think he’s have time to be a Big because of his busy schedule. But after meeting Marcos and his ear-to-ear grin, he knew it would be easy to spare one hour per week.

"To me, it's my opportunity to come in and spend time with a young person and help him see a bigger world full of opportunity and hopefully he runs after those opportunities and can achieve more in his life than he would if I wasn't a part of it,” Rupp said.

And it’s not just fun and games. When Marcos needs academic help, Bill is right there to guide him.

"Sometimes when there are hard words, he helps me out, and helps me to pronounce it,” Marcos said.

With just an hour of his time each week, Bill is making a huge difference in Marcos' life. Consider getting involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, and see how you can become a positive role model as well.
