WICHITA, Kansas -- The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization of Kansas is one of the largest mentoring programs in the country. Statewide, there are over 3,000 children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. Maybe that person could be you. KSN’s Leon Smitherman introduces us to Dustin, one of many young people on that waiting list.
There are two basic types of bowlers; those who are good and can actually knock down the pins and those who just roll the ball as hard as they can and hope for the best. That’s my style but 9-year-old Dustin is pretty good.
We hit the lanes together one afternoon and he patiently tried to teach this old dog some new tricks.
"It’s almost in the same spot as you bounced it off the wall before," Dustin told me.
But some of us are beyond help.
Dustin is smart and engaging but the best way to describe him would be to say he is just a really nice kid who desperately wants someone to spend some time with him. I asked him why he needs a big brother.
"Because when I come home from school the house is empty. I’ve got no one to play with. I want someone to play with," he told me.
I asked him what kind of big brother he would you be looking for. He said, "A big brother that could keep up with me!"
So if you have some extra time and think you could be a positive influence for a young person like Dustin, why not become a Big Brother or Big Sister. The time you spend with these kids could keep them in the right lane, and more importantly, keep them from striking out.
If you are a bowler or would like to get a team together and help out the Big Brother’s and Big Sisters of Sedgwick County, their "Bowl for Kids Sake" fundraiser is going on through April. For more information, you can call them at (316) 263-3300 or visit their website at ksbbbs.org.
