WICHITA, Kansas -- For over a year now, KSN and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program have been matching kids with mentors. Statewide, about 3,000 kids are on the waiting list. Here’s just one of them.
When we took 8-year-old Julius to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, we was like the proverbial kid in a candy store.
Executive Director Ted Hayes took us on a tour and Julius was loaded with questions.
"His name was Glen Cunningham," Hayes said. "Those are his shoes."
"Oh, can I have them," Julius joked.
From baseball greats to former Olympians, Julius finds it all interesting, but his favorite sport of all is basketball. His favorite team?
"Chicago Bulls."
Julius comes from a big family, so big in fact that one on one time with an adult is hard to come by.
So why does Julius want a big brother?
"Cause they would help me and take me places and play with me and they would hang out with me," Julius said.
So if you’re a sports fan, have a little extra time on your hands and could be a positive influence on a young person, how about calling the Sedgwick County Big Brothers and Big Sisters and be a mentor to someone like Julius. Give them a call at 263-3300 or visit the web link at KSN.com.
If you think you’d like to be a mentor, but don’t have the time, there’s a "Big’s in School" program that only takes 30 to 45 minutes a week.
