Wednesday's Child: Casey

By Leon Smitherman

WICHITA, Kansas, Dec. 06, 2006 -- For most men, shopping is about as enjoyable as getting a root canal and skipping the Novocain. But when it comes to electronics or sporting goods, it's a whole new game!

Shannon Selstedt grew up hunting and fishing. He wanted to share his love of the outdoors with a child who may not have the opportunity he had. So he, along with his wife Marnie, became part of the Big Brother's "Pass it on" program.

"When you take the kid out hunting or fishing or camping, and share the experience with them, it's fun to see them react for the first time," Shannon, Big Brother, said.

The "Pass it on" program is designed to match kids who love the outdoors, with adults or couples who share the same love of nature.

"We go huntin' and fishin' and we play video games, go out to eat and lots of other stuff," Casey, Selstedts' little brother, said.

14-year-old Casey has been matched with the Selstedts for about a year now. Obviously, the match is a good fit for all.

"We have time," Marnie, Big Sister, said. "We don't have children of our own, and our family is not around here so we might as well invest our time and energy in something worth while. He's very worthwhile. He's a good kid."

And what was Casey doing before he was paired up with the Selstedts?

"Sitting at home playing video games," Casey said.

Thanks to Big Brothers, the video games are off, and Casey is out of the house. And for Shannon and Marnie, it's brought hem closer together as well.

"We each have our different groups and different things we go to, and with Casey it's focused together,"

Shannon

said. "We spend time with him, and it's good time. It's a lot of fun."

Even if you and your spouse aren't the Grizzly Adams type, you can be matched as a couple with a child just like Casey, and share your own positive influence.
