WICHITA, Kansas, May 3, 2007 – Eleven-year-old Isaiah loves guitars. Even though he's never had a lesson in his life, he still wants to learn.
"Yeah pick that up"
"I can't," Isaiah said. "I don't want to drop it."
"Ahh, you're not going to drop it. If you do we'll run out of here really fast!"
Since my musical skills are limited to playing the radio, we went to Sensoney Music, where as luck would have it, we met Jim Hill.
Jim not only tuned up Isaiah's guitar, he gave him a brand new case, and then he did something else, truly generous. Without even being asked, Jim sat down and gave Isaiah his time.
"You know that song, Smoke on the Water?" Jim asked. "Let’s see if we can learn that real quick."
"On this?" Isaiah said.
"Yeah, oh yeah. It will work just fine."
For nearly an hour they practiced together.
"The idea is to get right in here," Jim said. "You want to be in between those lines."
Jim patiently worked with Isaiah, letting him try out several different guitars in the process.
"It was cool, cause I never played the electric guitar and the base," Isaiah said.
Jim isn't Isaiah's Big Brother, but it soon became apparent that their time together is a perfect example of what the Big Brother's program is all about - an adult sharing time, knowledge and experience with a kid whose only desire is to have someone care.
