Wednesday’s Child: Jimmy

By Kevin White

WICHITA, Kansas, June 8, 2007 -- The first Wednesday of every month we bring you the story of a child looking for a Big Brother or Big Sister. Here we meet nine-year-old Jimmy, who spent a day at the museum with KSN's Leon Smitherman.

When I took Jimmy to the Museum of World Treasures to see the brand new Tyranosaurus exhibit, I thought I might be able to share some of my dinosaur expertise with him. As it turned out, it was the other way around.

"They found him on a farm and named him ‘Ivan’ after the farmer on the farm," said Jimmy.

Jimmy is a very bright and talkative young man with a great sense of humor and he knows lots of stuff about lots of things.

I asked him if he knew about vultures.

"They’re mostly scavengers," said Jimmy. "Why go fight for your food when you can just go right up and eat it."

The more time I spent with Jimmy, the more I realized that, although he is only nine years old he seems much older. We had great conversations and talked about all sorts of things, including his future.

"I want to be an architect," said Jimmy. "Because I think it would really be fun and I’m really into drawing 3D stuff."

Jimmy lives with his mom and his sisters but his dad isn’t part of his life and he would like a Big Brothers just to spend some "guy time" with. His perfect Big Brothers?

"Someone that’s kind of like -- does almost everything and he’s real active -- I mean he likes sports and stuff and we’d go out a play sports every now and then."

That’s a small request from a young boy with big hopes and dreams for the future. Maybe you can be a part of that future too.

If you think you might be interested in becoming a big brother to James, or if you would like more information on how you could become a Big Brother or Big Sister, call them at 1-888-KS4-BIGS or visit their website at ksbbbs.org.
