WICHITA, Kansas, July 11, 2007 -- This month we revisit a little guy you've met before. Deonte was looking for a brother and now he's found one. KSN's Leon Smitherman explains why it's a perfect match.
You first met eight-year-old Deonte back in February. We took him bowling along with his younger brother and sister.
Back then, all three of them were looking for "Big's". After their story aired, you acted. The phones started ringing at Big Brothers. Today all three children are matched.
Deonte now has a Big Brother -- Mike Montgomery. They enjoy each other's company, shooting hoops, playing a little air hockey -- whatever. The important thing is the time they spend together is quality time.
"It's cool," said Deonte. "It's cool because I get to beat him at basketball. We go to his house and play Playstation 2."
Just watching Deonte and Mike together, you can tell the difference the match has made. Even though they kid around a lot, you can see the respect in Deonte's eyes. He looks up to Mike.
"It's better having a big brother," said Deonte.
"It's really pretty amazing," said Mike. "We really don't do anything too incredible, just hang out -- go shoot baskets or whatever. And just to see that he really looks up to you really makes you feel good."
Deonte says that he has been giving Mike all sorts of advice on important guy stuff like basketball, video games and...
"Gettin' ladies," pipes in Deonte.
Mikes wife is not so crazy about that last piece of advice.
"You know, I've gained a friend from it I really wasn't expecting in a short amount of time but hopefully we will be together for quite a while!," said Mike.
If you think you would be interested in being a Big Brother or Sister but don't think you have the time, think again. Being a Big only takes about 40 minutes a week -- less time than it takes to have a cheeseburger and fries. And I promise you, being a Big is lower in calories and much better for your heart.
