Wednesday's Child: Clayton

By Melissa Baier

HARVEY COUNTY, Kansas, Aug. 6, 2007 – On the first Wednesday of very month, KSN brings you the story of a child looking for a big brother or sister.

We usually show you kids from Wichita, but tonight, a change of pace.

KSN's Leon Smitherman introduces us to this month's Wednesday’s Child from Harvey County.

Twelve-year-old Clayton lives in Newton. So on a recent trip to Wichita, we had a chance to spend some time together. On a hot and humid afternoon, a couple of cool hours checking out Exploration Place sounded like a good idea.

"There's a little wind, so it's going to keep trying to blow you that way."

Even though there are plenty of things to explore, we spent most of our time in the flight simulators.

"The trick is don't try to over fly it. Keep your nose down, a little more throttle."

With a light hand and a little guidance, Clayton caught on fast.

"We're gonna flare now. You're doing good. Cut your throttle, now flare, pull back on the stick real gently, and we'll glide right on in. Whoa, don't let us go yet captain. Boom! Perfect.”

Being a big brother is a lot like flying a plane. A little change in attitude can make a big difference on where you end up. So what kind of big brother would Clayton like to have?

"I want him to be someone who listens to Rock ‘n Roll crazy, ride dirt bikes and stuff,” Clayton said.

“Sounds like a good big brother to me. That’s just like guy stuff.”

You know, it takes less than an hour a week to be a big brother. That’s just a little piece of time, but it can make a world of difference for a kid like Clayton. How you spend that time is up to you. Clayton and I decided to see who had the weaker stomach.
