Chalmers announces NBA draft eligibility

By Jessica Oakley

LAWRENCE, Kansas, April 23, 2008 (AP) - Kansas guard Mario Chalmers has declared himself eligible for the NBA draft. But he's leaving open the possibility of returning to the national champion Jayhawks by not signing with an agent.

The 6-foot-1 junior said Wednesday that he will enter the June 26 draft only if he's projected to be taken in the first round. He said he's currently projected to be picked between 25th and 35th, but hopes to move up through predraft workouts.

Chalmers led the Jayhawks in assists at 4.3 per game and tied Darrell Arthur as Kansas' second-leading scorer at 12.8 points. He also hit one of the biggest shots in Kansas history, a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to send the national championship game into overtime.

The Jayhawks went on to beat Memphis 75-68 for their third national title.
