GODDARD, Kansas, June 26, 2008 -- Goddard shortstop Logan Watkins, drafted in the 21st  ound by the Chicago Cubs, said it would take a $500,000 signing bonus to keep him from attending Wichita State.  The Cubs met his demand and Watkins will sign with the major league organization on Friday.

Along with a $100,000 allowance to attend college, Watkins is receiving compensation generally given to second- and third-round picks.

Watkins, who was also an all-state quarterback at Goddard, will report for workouts in Mesa, Arizona.  He is then scheduled to join short season Class A Boise to begin his professional career.

This is the second consecutive year a Goddard player has signed a pro contract instead of attending Wichita State.  Last year, catcher Derek Norris signed with Washington after being drafted in the fourth round.

Watkins was one of six Shocker signees drafted this year.  He is the only one so far who has signed with a pro team.  Players have until August 15 to sign with a professional organization.
