Chalmers, Arthur sent home from NBA rookie program

By Connie Giefer

RYE BROOK, New York, September 3, 2008 (AP) - Former Kansas stars Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were sent home from the NBA's mandatory rookie transition program for violating league rules at four-day program, held at the Doral Arrowhead Resort.

ESPN the Magazine reports that resort security caught the two players with marijuana and women in their room.

Both the Miami Heat and his Chalmers’ agent, Sam Goldfeder, confirmed to The Associated Press that the guard left the program.

The Memphis Grizzlies acknowledged Arthur "was sent home ... for violating program rules" but declined to give details.

ESPN the Magazine further reports that Chalmers and Arthur were each fined $20,000 and could be suspended to start their first NBA season.

Both were key figures in KU’s NCAA championship win over Memphis.  Arthur had a double-double in points and rebounds, while Chalmers hit the miraculous three-point shot to send the game into overtime.

KU coach Bill Self issued the following statement:

“We really don’t know all the facts yet, and I certainly would never comment publicly on any personal matter concerning any player I have ever coached. Beyond that, I can say that both Mario and Darrell were great to coach. They played a huge role in our success the past few years, in large part due to their unselfishness and the sacrifices they made for our program. We all very much enjoyed our time and association with both of them, and we will continue to support them.”
