Ryan Khoury singled home two runs in the third to put Wichita up 3 to 1.
Kipp held the Explorers at bay getting out of situations in the fourth and sixth innings.
Jake Kahaulelio two run homer in the seventh padded the lead to 5 to 1.
Sioux City came back to score twice in the bottom of the ninth but Josh Dew came out of the bullpen to retire Peter Barrows on strikes. Barrows represented the tying run.
Wichita and Sioux City meet in game two of the series Friday night.
