WICHITA, Kansas - - The Wichita Wingnuts won the American Association Central Division title with a 5 to 3 win over the Grand Prairie AirDogs Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
It is the fourth division crown in the last five years for Wichita.
After falling behind, the Wingnuts scored three times in the third inning the game. David Amberson scored on a groundout off the bat of Jared McDonald. Jake Kahaulelio doubled and went to third as John Rodriguez hustled to first to beat throw on a ground ball to second base. Rodriguez attempted to steal second and drew a throw allowing Kahaulelio to score. C.J. Ziegler singled in Rodriguez to knot the contest.
Brent Clevelen scored the lead run in the fourth. Clevelen single and came around to score on a wild pitch. Amberson singled home Abel Nieves for the final run.
James Giulietti picked up the win in relief with six strong innings of work. Gulietti struck out five. Four relievers combine to hold the lead including Josh Dew who struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 24th save.
The two team meet again Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
