Carroll’s Bell quickly passing toward stardom

By Jessica Oakley

WICHITA, Kansas, October 1, 2008 -- At Bishop Carroll, the offense starts with the call of junior quarterback Blake Bell, who leads the city league with more than 1100 yards of passing and 14 touchdown passes.  Yet he’s started only four varsity games at quarterback.

“I played quarterback most all my life,” explains Bell, “except (last) year I played receiver.”

As a receiver, Bell says he learned a things that translate back to playing quarterback.

Add in his 6’6” frame and Coach Alan Schuckman calls Bell “a presence back there that makes it tough on defenses."

There are other attributes that can't be defined by a tape measure.  His father, Mark, and uncle, Mike, both went from Bishop Carroll to the NFL.  So Blake has a strong football IQ.

"It just seems like I've been around the game and learned the game and known how to do everything since I was real little.

Although he’s only a junior, most Big 12 schools have shown interest.  Notre Dame, Georgia and Florida are among the return addresses of 15-20 letters that pour in each week.

This Friday, Bell and the Eagles host undefeated East.
