Gold Medal Moment #1: KU wins 2008 NCAA basketball championship on strength of Mario Chalmers big shot

By Kevin White

LAWRENCE, Kansas, Aug. 24, 2008 -- For our #1 Gold Medal Moment, we went to Allen Fieldhouse, where it strikes us that neither Phog Allen or James Naismith were on our final list of Gold Medal Moments but no one ever said this was a scientific poll.

And it's not that KU wasn't well-represented. Eight of our final 20 involved the Jayhawks, including the overwhelming #1.

Mario Chalmers' shot didn't win the national championship. Heck, it wasn't even a buzzer-beater. But it completed the comeback -- down nine points to Memphis with two minutes to play.

"The thing that I told them is we will get a break. And when we catch a break, we've just got to get one stop at a time and go score," said Bill Self, KU coach.

KU went on a 12-to-3 run to force overtime, yet most people only remember Chalmers' shot.

"I think it did overshadow some other players that really played well in that championship game -- if you look at a guy like Darrell Arthur, who made two huge shots in the last two minutes of regulation," said Jason King, author, "A Year to Remember". "People forget about the big steal and three-pointer Sherron Collins made or Brandon Rush's defense on Chris Douglas-Roberts. Again, there were so many storylines of that game that got overshadowed by Mario's shot but I don't think anyone's complaining because they got their rings.

There was plenty of glory to go around. Chalmers was one of five Jayhawks drafted into the NBA. He signed a $2.3-million contract with the Miami Head.

"I'm in a great situation in Miami," said Chalmers. "I have great players alongside of me with Dwayne Wade, Shawn Marion and Michael Beasley, so it's going to be a lot of fun next year."

But probably not as fun as his famous shot. Chalmers says he watched the replay of the shot a lot shortly after it happened but hasn't even seen it for a couple months now.

"We think about it a lot. I think it's mostly just because we won the National Championship but the shot was a big part."

"He's going to be a legend in this state for the rest of his life and he's just starting to realize it," said King.

"It was just one of those moments when I had a good look and I was feeling confident and the ball went in for me," said Chalmers.

Mario Chalmers' shot also makes KU fans forget the near-upset to Davidson and makes the win over Roy Williams and Carolina all the sweeter.

How overwhelming a choice was the 2008 Championship in our Gold Medal countdown? It had more gold medal votes than the second, third and fourth place spots combined.

We used a straight 3-2-1 system to accumulate the points. That is, three points for a Gold, two for a Silver and one for a Bronze. 603 of you voted and for that, we thank you. If you want to see all of the results, visit our Gold Medal Moments web page.
