“Saturday Night Live” welcomes back another alum as host this week.
John Mulaney spent most his time on “SNL” behind the scenes, but helped create one of the show’s most popular characters.
Mulaney worked with Bill Hader to create “Stefon” almost eight years ago.
“It is totally baffling and wonderful to Bill and I that Stefon became popular,” Mulaney says now.
In fact, they doubted the offbeat character would ever even make the show.
“I emailed the head writer of Update and I said, ‘When this gets cut’, can we please try it again?
So the fact that it caught on with many people is shocking to us,” he says.
Fueled in part by several Netflix specials, Mulaney has since caught on as one of the country’s most popular stand-up comedians.
“When I was a writer, I often dreamed of being the host, especially when the host didn’t like the sketches I wrote, because then I would have gotten my sketches in,” he laughs.
Mulaney’s musical guest this week is Jack White.
